POSITION OBJECTIVE
Working under general supervision, the Research Assistant 2 will support the research, evaluation, and community-engaged activities of the Prevention Research Center for Healthy Neighborhoods (PRCHN) across multiple projects. The Research Assistant will perform literature reviews, contribute to research design and protocol development, support community-based data collection, coordinate with community partners, and manage project-related data systems. Playing an integral role in training student trainees and coordinating the PRCHN Summer Internship Program. This position supports the PRCHN's mission to bridge community partners and university researchers to focus their collective expertise to develop, test, and implement sustainable strategies to improve health in underserved communities.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
Conduct literature reviews and support research planning; Review and synthesize scientific and gray literature to support research proposals, evaluation plans, and community-focused projects; Assist with preparation of background summaries and evidence tables. (15%)
Develop and implement data collection protocols; Assist in designing data collection instruments and procedures for community-based and observational research; Develop training materials and standard operating procedures; Lead training sessions for students and community data collectors on protocol implementation. (20%)
Manage and clean research data; Maintain REDCap, Qualtrics, Excel, and other data systems; Clean, code, and organize data in preparation for analysis; Apply quality-control procedures to ensure data integrity. (20%)
Coordinate community-based data collection and partner engagement; Serve as a point of contact with community partners and project sites to schedule, prepare, and support research activities; Engage professionally with community stakeholders to support equitable, respectful partnership. (20%)
Supervise students and coordinate PRCHN Summer Internship Program; Train and oversee undergraduate and graduate student trainees involved in data collection and project support; Support recruitment, selection, onboarding, and daily coordination of PRCHN Summer Interns; Provide guidance, mentorship, and feedback on student learning and performance. (15%)
NONESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
Support IRB documentation and research compliance; Assist in preparing IRB protocols, amendments, and continuing reviews; Maintain regulatory documentation for ongoing projects. (5%)
Perform other duties as assigned. (5%)
CONTACTS
Department: Daily contact with supervisor and PRCHN research staff to discuss project needs and maintain workflow.
University: Occasional contact with other university departments to coordinate research activities or share information.
External: Regular contact with community partners, program sites, and local organizations to coordinate data collection and support research engagement.
Students: Frequent contact with undergraduate and graduate students to provide training, support, and direction.
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITY
This position does not supervise staff employees but will train new staff and direct the work of student employees and interns.
QUALIFICATIONS
Education/Experience: Bachelor's degree and 1 to 3 years of related experience. Or Associate's degree in an approved biotechnology program. 2 to 4 years of experience.
REQUIRED SKILLS
Knowledge of commonly used concepts, practices, and procedures within public health, epidemiology, social science, or community-engaged research.
Experience with data management and statistical software.
Demonstrated ability to adhere to research protocols and follow established procedures.
Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
Comfort with community-based fieldwork.
Experience supporting IRB submissions or maintaining regulatory documents.
Demonstrated history of successful support, education, and advocacy for all students, aligned with the values, mission, and messaging of the university, while adhering to the staff policy on conflict of commitment and interest.
Ability to interact professionally with colleagues, students, and community partners face to face.
Ability to meet consistent attendance.
Willingness to learn and utilize Artificial Intelligence (AI).
WORKING CONDITIONS
General office and community fieldwork settings. Local travel required for community data collection and partner meetings. Some evening events required depending on community schedules. May require being outdoors or in community settings with variable conditions. May have exposure to hazards typical of fieldwork or research environments.
