Job Summary The Physician Assistant (PA) - Colorectal Surgery is a licensed, certified, non-physician healthcare provider who provides direct patient care under the supervision of a collaborating colorectal surgeon. The PA is responsible for evaluating, diagnosing, and treating patients with colorectal conditions in both clinic and hospital settings. This role includes pre-operative, post-operative, inpatient, outpatient, and procedural care. The APP functions as an integral member of the colorectal surgery team and practices within the scope defined by the supervising physician and state regulations. Schedule * Monday - Friday * 8:00 AM - 4:30 PM * Full-Time * Day Shift * No Travel Required Essential Functions of the Role * Perform comprehensive and focused histories and physical examinations for colorectal surgery patients. * Evaluate and manage patients with conditions including hemorrhoids, anal fissures, fistulas, abscesses, colorectal cancer, inflammatory bowel disease, diverticulitis, rectal prolapse, and other gastrointestinal disorders. * Order, interpret, and evaluate laboratory, imaging, and diagnostic studies. * Develop and implement treatment plans in collaboration with supervising physicians. * Provide pre-operative and post-operative management for colorectal surgery patients. * Perform office-based procedures and assist with surgical procedures as delegated and credentialed. * Typical procedures may include: * Anoscopy * Incision and drainage of abscesses * Suture/staple removal * Wound care and dressing changes * Ostomy evaluation and management * Rectal examinations * Flexible sigmoidoscopy assistance * Round on hospitalized patients and coordinate care transitions. * Educate patients and families regarding diagnoses, treatment plans, medications, surgical recovery, bowel management, nutrition, and preventive care. * Maintain accurate and timely documentation within the electronic medical record. * Collaborate with physicians, nurses, and multidisciplinary teams to provide high-quality patient-centered care. * Participate in call coverage and additional patient care responsibilities as needed by department operations. Key Success Factors * Knowledge of colorectal diseases, surgical management, and perioperative care. * Ability to assess, diagnose, and manage acute and chronic colorectal conditions. * Strong procedural and clinical assessment skills. * Excellent interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills. * Ability to work independently and collaboratively within a multidisciplinary team. * Critical thinking and problem-solving abilities. * Proficiency with EMR systems and clinical software applications. * Commitment to evidence-based practice and patient-centered care. Qualifications Education * Graduate of an accredited Physician Assistant program required. Experience * Experience in surgery, colorectal surgery, gastroenterology, or related specialty preferred. * New graduates with relevant clinical rotations may be considered. Certification/Licensure * Current licensure as a Physician Assistant in the State of Texas required. * Current certification by the National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants (NCCPA) required. * Basic Life Support (BLS) required within 30 days of hire or transfer. * DEA license eligible or obtained as required.
