Assistant Principal - Port Susan Middle School

8 hours/day, 213 workdays/year – Anticipated Start Date July 1, 2026
Every student in the Stanwood-Camano School District is empowered to learn in an inclusive setting and is prepared for the future of their choice. Port Susan Middle School is seeking an assistant principal who is a strong instructional leader, and understands the importance of student learning, effective instruction, and empowering infrastructure.
The assistant principal functions as an instructional leader first. This includes bringing our Educational Equity policy to life in our schools. Also required are school improvement and annual action planning, ensuring high-quality instruction, providing ongoing professional development, constructive feedback, and more. School assistant principals also perform administrative duties, including the supervision and evaluation of staff, coordination of the instructional program, maintaining responsibility for other administrative duties as assigned, and promoting the educational development of each student. This person will also work with district administration to articulate the district's strategic plan and provide visionary leadership necessary to attain goals.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: This list of essential job functions is not exhaustive and may be supplemented as necessary. Depending upon individual assignment, the employee may perform all or a combination of several of the following duties:
- Assist the principal in the general administration of the school, and serve as principal when the principal is absent
- Assist in maintaining accurate records regarding the progress of students through report cards, discipline referrals, attendance records and conferences
- Assist in establishing and overseeing School Crisis Management Plan
- Supervise and evaluate assigned staff as directed by building principal
- Implement board policies and collective bargaining agreement provisions applicable to the middle school
- Maintain adherence to all applicable federal and state regulations and laws
- Supervise student conduct and assume responsibility for the enforcement of discipline as necessary providing due process for the rights of students
- Administer student attendance policy and procedures
- As requested, act as the principal's designee for special education conferences, Section 504 conferences, and intervention proceedings
- Establish and maintain effective communication with the community, parents, staff and students
- Participate in district-level decision making and planning as a member of the building and district administrative teams
- Provide leadership to create a school culture that promotes on-going improvement of learning and teaching for students and staff
- Assist in leading the school improvement planning and implementation
- Work collaboratively with other administrators to develop and maintain positive building climate
- Assist in the supervision of extra-curricular activities
- Assist in coordination of school safety
- Assist in coordinating all state testing
- Observe strict confidentiality with student and personnel information
- Assist the principal in responding to calls from the district's security company

Requirements
JOB REQUIREMENTS; MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Skills in:
- Strong oral and written communication skills and strong active listening skills
Knowledge of:
- State Teacher Principal Evaluation Program (UW-CEL framework preferred)
- Assessment, curriculum development, program planning, implementation and evaluation
- Rules and regulation governing the operation of secondary schools
- ASB rules and regulations
Ability to:
- Create a positive school climate for students, staff and community
- Work with others in a team environment, creating and implementing staff development programs, securing parental and community support for programs, and working successfully with diverse secondary-aged students
- Develop and implement crisis management plans for schools
- Provide instructional leadership
- Facilitate resolution of complex interpersonal issues among others
- Meet deadlines and schedules
- Respond to changing priorities and emergency situations
- Complete work with a professional quality within time constraints in a rapidly changing environment
- Plan and administer budgets
- Establish and maintain positive effective working relationships with a variety of individuals and groups from diverse backgrounds
EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE:
- Valid Washington State Principal Credential for secondary level
- Master's Degree in educational administration or related field
- Current Washington State Teacher Certificate
- Successful building administrator preferred
- Minimum five (5) years successful teaching experience preferred
WORK ENVIRONMENT: The work environment characteristics described are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job. Work is typically performed in and around a student learning environment; may be exposed to childhood diseases; may be required to balance and crouch, crawl, bend or kneel; may be exposed to high noise levels. The employee may be required to address the needs of distraught or angry parents of students and will likely experience a multitude of demands and changing priorities with frequent interruptions.

- Washington State Patrol and FBI Fingerprint Clearance
- Proof of Immunization (if born 1/1/57 or later)
- I-9 Employment Eligibility in compliance with the Immigration Reform Act.
- HIV/HBV Training (obtain within 30 days of hire date-district provided)
- Sexual Harassment Training (obtain within 30 days of hire-district provided)
