Description
Position Summary:
Under the supervision of the Community Development Director. May work with Assistant
Manager/Assistant Community Development Director on special projects or tasks as assigned.
Assists with and performs site plan reviews, assists with and prepares reports for the Planning
Commission and Zoning Board of Appeals. Assists with current development activities and
tasks to promote economic development within the Township. Assists with performing
comprehensive plan updates and enforcement of the zoning ordinance. Performs other tasks to
assist in operations as assigned.
Essential Job Functions:
An employee in this position may be called upon to do any or all of the following essential

to perform. To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each
essential function satisfactorily.
- Conducts research, assists with preparing reports, attends public hearings and various
meetings as needed; and assists with making recommendations for a variety of zoning,
planning, and economic development related issues. - Assists with the site plan review process, including assisting with preparing reports,
attends Planning Commission meetings as needed. - Serves as staff liaison to the State Street Corridor Improvement District Board or assists
the Community Development Director with activities for the State Street Corridor
Improvement District Board as needed. - Performs on-site investigations of properties as they relate to zoning, planning, and
property development. - Assists with sign permits, fence permits, and other planning and zoning related permits as
needed. - Assists with responding to Freedom of Information Act requests.
- Works with and creates maps for reports and special assignments.
- Assists with or otherwise performs community outreach. This may include, but may not
be limited to performing updates to the Township website(s) and conducting community
surveys. - Assists with Economic Development activities/tasks as needed or assigned.
- Assists with and performs the Code Enforcement function as needed or assigned.
- Assists with reviews of business license applications for compliance to ordinances and
regulations under the control of the Community Development Department. - Assists with review of outdoor event permits, food truck permits and other special
permits. - Scans documents as needed.
- Assists with preparation of new ordinances and amendments to existing ordinances.
- Assists with collecting and reviewing data to recommend updates to the Comprehensive
Development plan. - Assists with completing research as needed as assigned.
- Assists with creation of specialized plans at the direction of the Community Development
Director. - Assists with preparation of grant applications and submittal and administration if
awarded. - Performs other work assignments and projects as assigned by the Community
Development Director. - Performs other duties as assigned.

Requirements
Required Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and Minimum Qualifications:

Requirements include the following:
- Bachelor’s degree in planning, public administration, or related field.
- A Michigan Vehicle Operator’s License.
- Knowledge and understanding of state planning and zoning acts and applicable local
land-use ordinances and regulations. - Knowledge of the principles and practices of township/municipal planning and land-use
issues. - Skill in interpreting and applying planning guidelines and ordinances.
- Skill in the use of office equipment and technology, including computers and GIS
software, and the ability to master new technologies. - Skill in compiling and evaluating data/information applicable to planning and land-use
for assimilation into reports, plans, and websites. - Ability to establish effective working relationships and use good judgment, when dealing
with developers, residents, elected officials, employees, other governmental and
regulatory agencies, and professional contacts. - Ability to effectively communicate and present ideas and concepts, and make
presentations in public forums. - Ability to travel to various locations.
- Must be able to efficiently manage time and organize records.
- Must be able to deal positively and effectively with citizens in a non-confrontational
manner. - Ability to assess situations and solve problems, and work effectively under stress, within
deadlines, and changing work priorities.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk, hear, view and
create documents. The employee frequently is required to stand, walk, use hands to finger,
handle, or feel, and reach with hands and arms. The employee is occasionally required to stoop,
kneel, or crouch. The employee must frequently lift and/or move items of light to moderate
weight.
While performing the duties of this job, the employee works in a business office setting and in
the field. In the course of field activities, the employee is frequently exposed to outside weather
conditions. The noise level in the work environment is usually quiet in the office, and may
become moderate or potentially loud in field situations.
