Description
OverviewBig Canyon Country Club offers an introductory operational role for an aspiring professional looking to establish a career framework within a high-end private equity environment. Founded in 1971, our club is a premier Newport Beach institution dedicated to maintaining elite service standards and a highly structured golf operation.
We are currently navigating a comprehensive golf course renovation led by architect Andrew Green. Joining our team during this operational relaunch provides an Assistant-in-Training with a firsthand look at how a premier club manages tee sheet logistics, member flow, and daily service protocols during a major club milestone.
Mentorship & Training
We view the Assistant-in-Training role as the baseline foundation for a career in golf management. Our leadership team focuses heavily on teaching the core mechanics of daily club operations, offering direct, daily mentoring in pace-of-play management, front-line hospitality, and essential private club etiquette.
This position is structured to support your professional entry into the industry within a stable workplace framework:
- PGA Education Support : For candidates currently entering the PGA Associate program or operating as a PGA Affiliate, we provide the mentorship, structural context, and flexible timing necessary to support your initial level progression.
- Team-First Environment: We foster a collaborative, professional workplace where input is valued, performance is recognized, and team accountability is part of our daily culture.
Experience Required
- Experience: 1-2 years of experience within a golf operation, guest services, or luxury hospitality environment.
- Hospitality Focus: A proven background in front-facing customer service, with a natural ability to anticipate guest needs and deliver a welcoming first impression.
- Athletic or Golf Background: A strong foundational knowledge of the game of golf, its rules, and traditional golf etiquette is preferred but not required if the candidate possesses exceptional hospitality experience.
Essential Responsibilities
This position blends front-line member hospitality with essential operational logistics. Working directly under the guidance of our Assistant Golf Professionals and Head Professional, your daily focus will include:
- Pace & Flow Management: Assist as the course starter, managing the first tee efficiently, communicating daily course conditions, and ensuring an orderly flow of play that respects member expectations.
- Operational Adaptability: Support the broader golf operation by leading and working alongside our player service staff in the player service operation, assisting inside the golf shop, helping execute tournament logistics, and providing operational coverage for junior camps and clinics as needed.
- Front-Facing Hospitality: Maintain a highly visible, professional presence at the staging area and starting tees, greeting members by name and proactively addressing operational questions.
- Service Standards Coordination: Work alongside our player services team to ensure our practice facilities and staging environments consistently meet club presentation guidelines.
What We Are Looking For
- PGA Status: Current PGA Affiliate, Level 1 Associate, or an individual with a strong intent to enter the PGA PGM program.
- Experience: Initial experience within a golf operation, customer service, or high-end hospitality environment, paired with a strong desire to master private club standards.
- Communication Skills: An outgoing, organized, and professional demeanor with the ability to confidently and politely manage tee sheet logistics with the membership.
- Professional Drive: A punctual team player who takes pride in the details of daily operations and wants to grow within the industry.
