POSITION OBJECTIVE
The Assistant Director for Research and Education provides planning, execution, and continuous improvement of the research and education portfolios of the Flora Stone Mather Center for Women. This position has delegated authority for setting priorities, allocating resources, and overseeing research, assessment, and educational initiatives. Reporting to the Senior Associate Director, the assistant director translates strategic goals into executable plans and ensures alignment across research and education functions.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
Plan and lead the development, implementation, and assessment of the Center's annual research agenda. Serve as a principal contributor to and reviewer of research briefs, reports, and related publications, with responsibility for editorial quality, consistency, and strategic messaging. Provide leadership for grant development activities, including drafting and reviewing proposals, monitoring grant deliverables, and ensuring compliance with funder and institutional requirements. Oversee those engaged in research, evaluation, and publication workflows, establish standards for research quality and timeliness, and remain current on emerging research, evaluation methodologies, and best practices relevant to the Center's focus areas. (30%)
Provide the Center's educational and training programs, including responsibility for program design, implementation, and evaluation. Develop and provide high-impact workshops, presentations, and learning sessions. Set expectations for program outcomes and assessment, ensure offerings are research-informed and inclusive, and approve programmatic priorities. Coordinate with the operations manager to align program logistics, staffing, and resources, and cultivate partnerships with campus and community stakeholders to advance program goals. (20%)
Direct the Center's faculty and staff programs, including professional development initiatives, training programs, and internal research and professional development grants. Exercise decision-making authority over program structure, timelines, and resource deployment. Plan and lead academic and scholarly initiatives such as lectures, symposia, conferences, research collaborator convenings, and grant review processes. Supervise and evaluate staff supporting these efforts, ensuring accountability for outcomes, effective communication, and alignment with the Center's strategic priorities. (25%)
Serve as a liaison between the Center and faculty and staff across the university. Proactively identify institutional needs, gaps, and opportunities related to gender equity, research, and education, and translate those insights into programmatic recommendations. Partner with the leadership to shape engagement strategies and represent the Center in institutional forums, committees, and cross-unit initiatives. Oversee the dissemination of Center publications, research findings, and program information to ensure broad visibility and strategic impact among faculty and staff audiences. (20%)
NONESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
Perform other duties as assigned in support of Center-wide priorities, strategic initiatives, and institutional partnerships. (5%)
CONTACTS
Department: Daily/continuous contact with Senior Associate Director and other Mather Center staff
University: Continuous contact with staff, faculty, and students across the campus, to identify needs and coordinate programs and partnerships. Occasional contact with development, grant administration, and operations staff to support fundraising and similar efforts. Regular contact with partners in the Division of Student Affairs, academic schools, and other offices across campus to identify partnerships and plan programming.
External: Regular contact with researchers and practitioners across other college campuses, community partners and collaborators, and professional organizations or publication outlets.
Students: Frequent contact with undergraduate and graduate students related to research endeavors and programming
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES
This position has no direct supervision of staff.
QUALIFICATIONS
Experience: 3 years of experience in research and research-informed programming/education required.
Education: Master's degree in a field with an emphasis on research required.
REQUIRED SKILLS
Willingness to learn and work with artificial intelligence (AI) tools and technologies.
Demonstrated history of successful support, education, and advocacy for all students, aligned with the values, mission, and messaging of the university, while adhering to the staff policy on conflict of commitment and interest.
Ability to meet consistent attendance.
Ability to interact with colleagues, supervisors, and customers face to face.
Ability to identify appropriate sources for research on relevant topics such as gender equity
Excellent communication and interpersonal skills including respect for all aspects of an individual's identity, ability to resolve conflict, clear personal and professional boundaries, and ability to work collegially and collaboratively in an interdisciplinary team process.
Ability to plan and coordinate programming in conjunction with a team of others
Demonstrated knowledge of the role of gender in social relations in institutions.
Ability to supervise staff, students, student groups and facilitate group planning, help resolve issues as needed.
Must be able to work independently most of the time and in intense collaboration with others when needed.
Dependability and good work habits.
Must be self-motivated and able to prioritize multiple responsibilities to meet deadlines.
Willingness to take leadership as well assist with general office tasks as needed.
Good working knowledge of Word, Excel, and other basic office programs
Strong research skills, including use of relevant software such as Qualtrics, quantitative and qualitative analysis software, etc.
WORKING CONDITIONS
Typical office locations on a university campus. Must be willing and able to have a flexible schedule and work occasional nights and weekends.
