SUBJECT: 2010-2011 U.S. News & World Report Hospital Rankings

Consumers use a wide variety of resources these days to select a hospital for medical care as more health data becomes public. Several organizations provide lists that rank hospitals using various criteria. This week, U.S. News & World Report, a national magazine, released its annual ranking of the best hospitals in the United States.

..Two Maryland acute care hospitals – Washington Adventist Hospital in Takoma Park and Shady Grove Adventist Hospital in Rockville – were ranked on the Washington, D.C. market list. Washington Adventist was listed 4th and Shady Grove Adventist 17th. Additionally, Washington Adventist Hospital was ranked 43rd nationally out of the top 152 hospitals for its Neurology/Neurosurgery department.

For the 2010-2011 national list, U.S. News evaluated nearly 5,000 hospitals, in 16 adult specialties, based on specific criteria that include death rates, patient safety, reputation among doctors, technology, nurse staffing and measures of quality care. For the Washington, D.C. area list, hospitals qualified based on their placements on the national list, as well as stringent benchmarks that include volumes for certain types of cases.
