Valley Health
Company Overview
Valley Health is a nonprofit organization serving the healthcare needs of people in and around an area known as the Top of Virginia, as well as parts of West Virginia and Maryland.
Valley Health was incorporated November 4, 1994, after Winchester Medical Center (WMC) and Warren Memorial Hospital (WMH), in Front Royal, had partnered to serve the region. Headquartered in Winchester, Virginia, Valley Health now operates six hospitals: WMC, WMH, Shenandoah Memorial Hospital (SMH) in Woodstock, VA, Page Memorial Hospital (PMH) in Luray, VA, Hampshire Memorial Hospital (HMH) in Romney, WV, and War Memorial Hospital in Berkeley Springs, WV.
Valley Health has a combined 594 licensed inpatient beds and 166 long-term care beds. The system is supported by more than 5,300 employees, and a medical staff of over 500.
Valley Health had 30,000 inpatient admissions in 2012 and more than 140,000 emergency room visits. Total outpatient encounters numbered approximately 800,000. Over 2,600 babies were delivered at Valley Health hospitals in 2012.

Company History
The system’s history goes back to Winchester Memorial Hospital which opened in 1903 with 36 beds. In 1984 it was renamed Winchester Medical Center and, in combination with Valley Regional Enterprises and Surgi-Center, became Winchester Regional Health Systems. In 1993 Warren Memorial Hospital in Front Royal joined the system and on November 4, 1994 the organization incorporated as Valley Health System.
Winchester Medical Center – Opened 1903
Winchester Medical Center, a 445-bed facility, offers a full range of medical, surgical, diagnostic and rehabilitation services, and participates in a variety of clinical trials. Centers of excellence include heart & vascular services, oncology, orthopedics, neurosciences, stroke care, women & children’s services, and bariatric treatment. Sophisticated inpatient services are supported by an array of outpatient services including imaging, wound care and rehabilitation. WMC is the only Level II Trauma Center in the region and serves as the tertiary services hub for the Shenandoah Valley corridor and surrounding counties. The North Tower opened in 2012 and features an expanded Emergency Department, Intensive Care Units and Newborn ICU, plus two shell floors ready for future expansion.
Warren Memorial Hospital – Opened 1951
Located in Front Royal, Warren Memorial Hospital has 60 licensed acute care beds and a 120-bed nursing facility providing skilled care and long-term care. The hospital offers emergency services, a broad array of surgical options, maternity services and more. Warren Memorial embraces the Planetree model of patient-centered care. In 2008 it opened an outpatient facility on Commerce Avenue that includes occupational health, outpatient rehabilitation services, and physician offices.
Shenandoah Memorial Hospital – Opened 1951
Shenandoah Memorial Hospital is a 25-bed facility in Woodstock, VA. SMH offerings include 24-7 emergency services, outpatient surgery, cardiopulmonary services, orthopedic surgery, medical imaging, diabetes management, inpatient and outpatient rehab, behavioral health services, sleep lab, cardiac and pulmonary rehab, wound care clinic, anti-coagulation clinic, wellness programs and health screenings. The hospital is supported by a team of physicians, some employed by SMH and others in their own independent practices.
Hampshire Memorial Hospital – Opened 1959
On January 1, 2008, Hampshire Memorial became the first West Virginia hospital to join Valley Health. HMH is a Critical Access hospital with 14 acute care beds, 30 long-term care beds and an emergency department. In addition, Hampshire Memorial and Valley Health provide rehabilitation and wellness services at Hampshire Wellness & Fitness that opened in Romney in 2007. In 2011 the community celebrated the opening of a new Hampshire Memorial Hospital and Rural Health Center. With the opening of the $30 million project Hampshire county residents have access to beautifully designed facilities that serve as a model for other Critical Access Hospitals.
Page Memorial Hospital – Founded 1925
Page Memorial is a licensed 25-bed critical access hospital in Luray, Virginia, which sees more than 10,000 patients in its emergency department each year. PMH joined Valley Health as an affiliate in January 2009. Services include home care and home medical services, PMH Outpatient Rehabilitation and Fitness Services and Page Surgical Services. PMH also operates Page Rural Health Care in Stanley. Valley Health financed construction of the new Page Health Care physicians’ outpatient office in Luray and the Page-Shenandoah Center in Shenandoah, both of which opened in 2012. With a staff of over 200, PMH is one of the largest employers in Page County.
War Memorial Hospital
Located in Berkeley Springs, WV, War Memorial Hospital has served residents in and around Morgan County since 1947. Valley Health began managing War Memorial for Morgan County in 1989, and in 2010 acquired the hospital. The community celebrated the completion of the construction of a totally new facility in early 2012. The new not-for-profit War Memorial Hospital is licensed by West Virginia and federally designated as a Critical Access Hospital (CAH) with 25 acute care and physical rehabilitation beds and a 16-bed extended care unit. In addition to those inpatient services, its outpatient services include general and specialty surgical services, a 24-hour emergency department, an all-digital medical imaging department, cardiac rehab, and an outpatient rehabilitation and wellness facility.
