U.S. Army Medical Department (AMEDD)
Company Overview
The U.S. Army Medical Department (AMEDD) is one of the largest and most advanced health care systems in the world and is on the forefront of medical science. For 200 years Army Medicine has not only served U.S. forces but advanced the medical knowledge of all mankind and reduced human suffering in many lands.
From nurses and dentists to veterinarians, dietitians and physicians, Army health care offers more than 90 professional health care career paths – more than any other military service. The Army’s health care system operates more than 600 world-renowned hospitals, clinics and facilities around the globe and encompasses six corps: dental, medical, medical service, medical specialist, nurse and veterinary.
The Army’s health care system is a $9.7 billion per year venture, employing 145,000 health care professionals and managing the care of more than five million patient beneficiaries. On an average day, AMEDD officers will provide 41,986 clinical visits, admit 374 patients, conduct 26,600 dental procedures, deliver 64 babies, write 54,048 outpatient prescriptions and inspect $23.2 million-worth of food.
Army medicine has an excellent reputation as a leader in health care delivery, medical education and medical research. Just as American technology has developed the most sophisticated weaponry in the world for the defense of our country; it has also provided the Army Health Care Team with the most advanced tools for preventing disease and treating illnesses and injuries. Army health care professionals work together as part of integrated health care team to provide the highest standard of patient care with a comprehensive and holistic approach.
Medical research at Army medical facilities has led to advancements in trauma care, HIV/AIDS, breast cancer treatment and more. Because of the wide scope of the Army’s activities, members of AMEDD have the opportunity to see and study diseases that are not usually encountered in civilian practice. Army health care professionals work in state-of-the-art facilities such as the San Antonio Military Medical Center which operates the renowned “Army Burn Center”; Brooke Army Medical Center which is noted for cardiology and emergency medicine; Madigan Army Medical Center equipped with the latest imaging equipment and filmless X-rays and a linear accelerator for radiation therapy; and Tripler Army Medical Center, named one of the top seven hospitals in the U.S., which is a world-class leader in fiber optic technology, and telemedicine development and research.
The high quality care provided by the Army health care system extends around the world through humanitarian missions. Army health care professionals travel overseas to use their special skills and equipment to help others in Panama, Honduras, Saharan Africa and other places in need. While there they provide education to local physicians, dentists and nurses, while treating patients and providing access to modern care to those who may never have access otherwise.
