Company History
Greenville Health System has a long history of serving the people of the Upstate. Greenville's first public hospital was established in 1912 to meet the health needs of a small but thriving city in upstate South Carolina. As the area's population and health care needs increased, the hospital expanded over the years and became the nation's first health system in 1952.
In the 1950s, the health system concept of health care delivery was ahead of its time, and that vision and leadership is why GHS is nationally recognized as a model for hospital systems. Greenville Health System has remained at the forefront of health care delivery, and as changes in health care affect the area, GHS continues to be forward thinking in developing health care innovations that provide patient-focused, cost-effective health care to the community.
