Company Overview
Elizabethtown Community Hospital is a not-for-profit JCAHO accredited facility with a budget of $19 million and 196 employees. The 25-bed facility is a Critical Access Hospital meaning that: 1) average acute care stays must be 96 hours or less and 2) the hospital qualifies for cost based reimbursement for Medicare and Medicaid. It received this designation in 1996 after having served the local community and environs as a 25-bed community hospital for over 70 years. In addition to acute care, the hospital provides end-of-life care, post surgery rehabilitation, long-term care and hospice respite, and has an average of 700 admissions each year. The hospital has a 24-hour emergency department, three primary care health centers and several specialty clinics. Visit www.ech.org for an on-line tour of the hospital and services.
In 1993, a formal affiliation between Community Providers Incorporated and Elizabethtown Community Hospital was finalized. Community Providers Inc. also owns CVPH Medical Center in Plattsburgh (a 341-bed facility located 40 miles to the north). The relationship created among these three entities allows for the sharing of resources and services, while retaining and maintaining the independence of each individual organization.
In 2008, the hospital underwent a significant addition and renovation. The project added approximately 8,000 square feet to the hospital and renovated another 9,000 square feet. Essentially, about one-half of the hospital has either been renovated or newly-constructed. The project included a brand-new ED, laboratory, radiology department, boardroom, lobby, registration area, clinic space, and administrative office space. Much of the hospital’s infrastructure was also upgraded, including the heating & air conditioning system, roof, and parking lot. Technological additions and upgrades were taken into account throughout the project, ensuring that the hospital could advance its systems and practices in conjunction with the future of medicine.
The hospital serves as the focal point for the delivery of health care services to residents of Essex County (pop. 30,000), along with a large number of seasonal residents, as the area is home to thousands of second homeowners, year-round tourists and travelers through the region along Interstate 87. The hospital’s market includes the towns of Elizabethtown, New Russia, Westport, Keene, Keene Valley, Willsboro, Port Henry, Mineville, Lewis, Essex and Moriah.
ECH is the cornerstone of a four-site system that includes community health centers in Elizabethtown, Westport and Wilmington, NY. The hospital offers a completely digital radiology department (10,000 studies annually), mobile MRI, 24-hour emergency department (5,000 patients annually), state-of-the-art laboratory (over 82,000 tests annually), chemotherapy unit, pharmacy, dialysis unit, PT department, and clinic space for visiting specialty physicians.
