The Orange County Department of Law, County Attorney’s Office, located in Goshen, New York, is seeking an attorney to fill a vacancy in its Family Law Division. The Orange County Department of Law is headed by the County Attorney, with 25 other attorneys in both the Municipal Law and Family Law Divisions.
The Family Law Division represents the Orange County Department of Social Services with respect to child and adult welfare matters, and public assistance recovery. Additionally, the Juvenile Justice Unit of the Family Law Division serves as the Presentment Agency for matters involving juvenile offenders and persons in need of supervision.
The candidate will be responsible for handling child abuse and neglect proceedings, including foster care placement, termination of parental rights and adoption matters in Orange County Family Court, as well as conducting fair hearings before administrative law judges. The position entails accurate and expeditious preparation of and/or response to various court documents, including petitions, applications, motions, and orders. Additionally, the position requires the ability to evaluate cases, negotiate settlements when appropriate, prepare for fact-finding hearings, and to prepare, review, and/or argue pre- and post-judgment motions and appeals when applicable. Multiple daily court appearances are standard.
Excellent analytical, communication, writing and computer skills are essential. Although the Family Law Division works in a highly collaborative environment among the attorneys, self-motivation and the ability to work independently are important attributes.
Recommended minimum qualifications include:
Admission to the New York State Bar and a member in good standing
Two years of experience in child welfare proceedings is preferred but not required
A fingerprinted supported background investigation is required before an appointment is made to some positions which may require a fee.
