Position Information

High school diploma or equivalent and 2 years of related experience

Position Summary
The primary purpose of the Field Services/Theriogenology Veterinary Assistant is to assist the theriogenology and Field Services department with daily in-house and on-site appointments, maintain and stock the necessary equipment to conduct the theriogenology service, and assist with maintaining records and charges for the theriogenology and field service department as appropriate. Handling/restraint of large animals. (Primarily horses/cows, but may include sheep, pigs, goats, and camelids). The assistant is needed to safely handle all temperaments of horses. This includes handling for lameness exams (jogging/lunging), procedures, standing surgeries, radiology/bone scan, neuro exams and stallion collection.
Other duties include assisting LVT's/Clinicians/Students/Client Support Coordinator in any capacity as needed for patient care, general housekeeping/stocking/stall maintenance, animal/sample transport, anesthetic induction/recovery, and utilization of VetView/Cubex (the hospital's medical records software and medication dispensing).

- Properly handle and restrain various species of animals.
- Effectively communicate.
- Work in a fast-paced environment while demonstrating excellent customer service, high degree of confidentiality, openness to teaching and providing consultation to a variety of stakeholders.
- Knowledge of general animal anatomy and ability to recognize signs of distress.
Physical Demands
- Lift and carry up to 50 pounds.
- Sit, stoop, and bend intermittently during the day on hard floor surfaces.
- Manual dexterity sufficient to accurately work with small, delicate pieces of equipment or large heavy objects/containers/machinery.
- Wear all protective gear including mask, gloves, gown, hairnet, safety goggles etc.
- Work for long periods of time with arms extended.
- Work within an environment that has high levels of animal sounds, bodily fluids that need disposal, and open wound management.
- Driving as needed to perform job tasks.

Manage the theriogenology production process:
- Check liquid nitrogen tank frequently and reorder when necessary
- Check semen storage tank no less than biweekly to maintain sufficient level of liquid nitrogen
- Maintain semen inventory list to monitor what is going in and coming out of semen tanks.
- Keep track of semen shippers, 2 dry shippers, 7 equitainers
- Maintain minimum of 5 Equine Express and 5 Canine Express Disposable shippers on hand at all times keep inventory of materials and supplies in semen lab
- Properly fill, use, and clean artificial vagina
- Properly use and maintain breeding phantom
- Keep collection supplies stocked
- Ship semen (frozen or chilled) via Fed-Ex or airline (Delta) counter to counter service
- Assist in process of freezing semen and properly handle frozen semen samples
- Set up transportation for tease mares to and from the hospital when needed
- Professionally communicate with owners the process of theriogenology appointments
- Any species: Prepare patient and set up supplies for procedures - canine, equine, bovine, small ruminant- artificial insemination(AI), uterine culture/cytology, uterine lavage/infusion, dystocia, and embryo transfer
- Keep track of mare book
- set up and use ultrasound
- Use cattle chute
- Maintain bull breeding soundness exam(BSE) supplies and equipment in stock and in working order
- Handling/restraint of large animals. (Primarily horses/cows, but may include sheep, pigs, goats and camelids). The handler is needed to safely handle all temperaments of horses. This includes handling for lameness exams (jogging/lunging), procedures, standing surgeries, radiology/bone scan, neuro exams and stallion collection.
- Administer medication, monitor vital signs, take samples of bodily fluids, either blood or urine.
- Establish effective working relationships with senior veterinary staff and clinicians and assist senior veterinary staff with animal care.
- Individual assists with all aspects of the patient's treatment and care, has a clear knowledge of the patient's medical condition, treatment, prognosis and plan.
- Informs attending clinician on any change or decomposition of the patient's condition in an informed and timely manner.
- May drive UGA owned vehicles to and from field appointments.
- Stock supplies of cleaning products and patient care equipment.
- Keep dystocia supplies in stock, and available for emergency use on vehicles and in house
- Ensure facility cleanliness with the use of mop, broom, chemical cleaning supplies to sanitize cages and the floors.
- Enter into VetView or other systems, lab work, charges, outside lab submissions, patient records, and comlogs
