Seasonal Assistant Horticulturalist
The Seasonal Assistant Horticulturalist focuses on all areas of horticulture and gardening. Responsibilities include working with a crew on installation, care, and maintenance of flowers and other plant materials at various sites throughout the city as well as assisting the lead Horticulturist with day-to-day tasks.
This position will work approximately April through October with varying hours (potentially up to 40 per week) depending on the weather and availability. General working hours will be 7:00am to 3:00pm Monday - Friday with occasional weekend hours. The City is willing to consider a flexible schedule.
The salary range for this role is $19.00 - $22.00 an hour.
Seasonal Gardener
The Seasonal Gardener focuses on all areas of horticulture and gardening; responsibilities include working with a crew on installation, care, and maintenance of flowers and other plant materials at various sites throughout the city.
This position will work approximately April through October. General working hours will be 7:00am to 3:00pm Monday - Friday with occasional weekend hours. Work schedule may vary depending on the weather and time of year.
The salary range for this role is $16.00 - $19.00 an hour.
Requirements
Seasonal Assistant Horticulturalist Essential Duties
- Installation/maintenance/removal of annuals, perennials, plants, shrubs, and trees at various garden sites and planter locations.
- Ensure that all plants at these sites are adequately weeded, watered, pruned, and fertilized to remain healthy and attractive throughout the growing season.
- Assist the lead Horticulturist with day-to-day assignments and work direction.
- Demonstrate courtesy and tact when dealing with the public and other staff.
- Work independently and take initiative in solving issues.
- Communicate effectively via verbal and written reports and forms.
- Other duties, including special projects, as needed or assigned.
Seasonal Gardener Essential Duties

Seasonal Assistant Horticulturalist Qualifications
Minimum Qualifications
- Must be at least 18 years of age.
- High school diploma or GED equivalent.
- Valid Driver's License.
- Ability to perform manual tasks for extended periods of time.
- Knowledge of plant varieties, their growth characteristics, and maintenance requirements.
- Willingness to work nights and weekends as work requires.
Desired Qualifications
- Experience in a horticulture-related field.
- Associates degree in horticulture or related degree.
- Pesticide applicator license.
- Valid Minnesota Commercial Driver's License (CDL).
Necessary Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Some knowledge of the tools, methods, and materials used in general maintenance.
- Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with other employees and the public.
- Ability to operate a variety of motorized vehicles and equipment in a safe manner.
- Physical strength sufficient to do strenuous laboring tasks under varying weather conditions.

Physical Demands

The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and the ability to adjust focus.
Work Environment
The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job. While performing the duties of this job, the employee frequently works in outside weather conditions. The employee occasionally works near moving mechanical parts; in high, precarious places; and is occasionally exposed to wet and/or humid conditions, fumes or airborne particles, caustic chemicals, extreme cold, extreme heat and vibration. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
