DescriptionThe Department of Art and Design at Southern Illinois University Edwardsville (SIUE) invites applications for a tenure-track Assistant Professor specializing in Painting and Digital Illustration, beginning August 2026. We seek candidates with a demonstrated commitment to excellence in undergraduate and graduate teaching and mentorship, a strong exhibition record, and an active creative practice.
The successful candidate will teach a range of courses-from foundations to advanced levels-in painting and digital illustration for both undergraduate and graduate students. They will collaborate with current drawing and painting faculty to strengthen the existing painting curriculum and will develop new coursework and curricular pathways in digital illustration. Additional responsibilities include student mentorship and advising, participation in MFA thesis committees, and service to the department, college, and university.
The Department of Art and Design
The NASAD-accredited Department of Art and Design includes 17 full-time faculty and offers undergraduate degrees in Art History, Art Studio, and Art Education, as well as graduate degrees in Art Studio and Art Therapy. The department is housed in a renovated, state-of-the-art facility on the main SIUE campus, featuring a 3,700-square-foot gallery, two dedicated smart classrooms for art history, and generously equipped studios supporting concentrations in: art education, ceramics, photography/digital arts, sculpture, glass, textiles, metalworking/jewelry, graphic design, painting, drawing, and printmaking.
The department hosts multiple exhibitions each year and supports a robust visiting artist and scholar program. Faculty also have access to the Louis Sullivan Ornament Collection-the world's largest known collection of the architect's ornamental work and salvaged architectural pieces-and the SIUE University Museum, an archive and research center housing more than 35,000 objects from archaeological artifacts to natural science specimens to fine art.

Qualifications
- MFA in Studio Art with concentration in Painting
- Demonstrated specialization in digital illustration
- Demonstrated skills at painting from direct observation
- At least two years of college-level teaching experience
- Active exhibition record

- Global vision for developing a curriclulum in contemporary art
- Commitment to developing a curriculum that exposes students to multiple cultural forms and diverse perspectives
- Deep understanding of art theory
- Evidence of working collaboratively with colleagues across disciplines
- Experience with, and commitment to, educating and mentoring students of diverse backgrounds and demographics
