Description
The Franklin County Personnel Department is accepting applications for the position of Assistant Public Defender within the Franklin County Public Defender’s Office.
This is a full-time position in a busy office that provides criminal defense services to individuals who cannot afford an attorney, as well as representation in Family Court for cases requiring assigned counsel. The position includes handling a variety of cases such as felonies, misdemeanors, and Family Court matters. After-hours arraignments will also be required and assigned by the department head.
Recent law school graduates are encouraged to apply.
Applicants must have strong communication, analytical, and problem-solving skills, and be able to manage multiple tasks at once. A strong commitment to serving low-income and underserved individuals is required. An understanding of the needs of rural communities is a plus.
Job duties include, but are not limited to:
Providing legal representation to clients in criminal and family court matters.
Appearing in local Town Courts, County Court, Family Court, and Support Court.
Filing motions, performing legal research, preparing and amending petitions.
Conducting hearings and trials.
Requirements
Minimum Qualifications:
Must be licensed to practice law in New York State and admitted to the New York State Bar.
Proof of admittance must be submitted with application.
