Brief Job Overview/Summary
Stockton University is seeking a tenure-track Assistant Professor to teach developmental first-year writing courses as part of an innovative, University-wide First-Year Studies program, housed in the School of General Studies. Experience with and commitment to first-year students, including especially our course for students who may benefit from extra support, is essential. As Writing Program faculty, new hires also will have opportunities to teach upper-level writing courses in our Writing Minor. The program is also in the process of re-imagining the University’s Writing-Across-the-Curriculum (WAC) program which will likely include Writing-in-the-Discipline (WID) requirements across majors, interdisciplinary collaborations and mentorship of campus faculty teaching WAC/WID, and assessment of discipline-specific writing objectives. The program hopes successful candidates can contribute to the re-imagined WAC/WID program. Successful candidates are expected to demonstrate ongoing scholarship/creative work, engage in University service, and teach in the interdisciplinary General Studies curriculum. Descriptions of Essential Duties/Responsibilities:
- Teach developmental first-year writing courses and upper-level writing courses as part of a 3/3 schedule of 4-credit courses, opportunities to teach in the General Studies curriculum, including teaching first-year seminars and courses in interdisciplinary minors, such as Africana Studies, Holocaust and Genocide Studies, Caribbean and Latin American Studies, and Digital Literacy and Multimedia Design
- Demonstrate ongoing scholarship/creative work
- Engage in service to the University, community and profession
- Serve as a preceptor (advisor) to students
- Perform other duties as may be assigned by the Dean of General Studies and/or the -Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs
- Support Stockton University’s diversity commitment and strong student-centered vision and mission
Required Qualifications:
- Ph.D. in Writing, Rhetoric, Literacy, Composition Studies, English, and/or Technical Communication or a closely related field is required for appointment as a Tenure Track Assistant Professor in FRST Writing. ABD candidates will be considered, but doctoral degree must be conferred on or before September 1, 2026.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Evidence of excellence in teaching and experience working with first-year students, especially in developmental writing courses
- Demonstrates a pedagogical approach that is informed by current and best practices in writing, composition, and rhetoric
- Record of or potential for research in writing, rhetoric, writing pedagogy or related fields
- Experience or interest in teaching underserved populations with an emphasis on anti-racist, social justice, or trauma-informed pedagogies
- Experience and knowledge of Writing-Across-the-Curriculum (WAC) or Writing-in-the-Disciplines (WID) approaches to composition whether through administrating a WAC/WID program, offering interdisciplinary faculty mentorship in writing, or teaching WAC/WID courses
