History of Trenton Country Club
Late 1890's
Cross the threshold of our clubhouse and enter a world of congenial camaraderie that began its legacy in the late 1890s. Follow in the footsteps of our notable members and guests. Astor (1901), Roosevelt (1901), Rockefeller (1911), Chaplin (1919), and Crosby (1928) are just a few of the distinguished guests who signed Trenton Country Club's leather-bound registry as they entered to dine with friends and colleagues or enjoy an afternoon on one of America's first golf courses.
1897
Trenton Country Club was originally known as "Oaklands" from the estate (circa 1808) upon which the Club expanded. Oaklands was the summer residence of George Whitefield Woodruff, a lifelong New Jerseyan. In 1798, President John Adams appointed George Woodruff to serve as U.S. Attorney for Georgia, uprooting him temporarily from his home. In George's absence, his brother, Aaron Dickinson Woodruff, serving as New Jersey's Attorney General, also at the behest of President Adams, was left to select the site and oversee the construction of a suitable summer house. Ninety years later, the property was purchased by a group of enterprising businessmen, who having been bitten by the golf bug, wanting a Club to enjoy their newfound passion close to home. Oaklands, as a club, formally opened its doors in 1897.
1898
The Oaklands original nine holes opened for play in 1898. The first nine holes were improved in 1906 following the hiring of James H. Norton as head professional. Norton, born in Scotland, and recruited by the Lawrenceville School to serve as its golf professional, clearly saw the potential of the Oaklands parcel. Under Norton's direction, and with the acquisition of additional land, the course was expanded to 18 holes and a completely new routing was introduced. The course was completed by Norton in 1914 before he moved from the area a few years later.
1922
In the Spring of 1922, world-renowned golf course architect A.W. Tillinghast visited Trenton Country Club for the first time in an official capacity. Trenton Country Club retained Tillinghast to examine and redesign the existing 18-hole golf course. Over the years, Tillinghast would make several more visits to Trenton Country Club, leaving his lasting imprint on the course. The legacy of Norton and Tillinghast continues to live and evolve with recent upgrades by noted golf architect Tyler Rae.
Proud of its historic roots but modern in its outlook, the Trenton Country Club continues to evolve in response to member interests. Today, our members mark their own history--with a legendary putt, a swim team medal, a tennis championship, or celebratory dinner with friends and family. We invite you to be a part of our extraordinary family and share in its exciting future.
