Overview

History of Shaker

In 1913 the club was born out of a split in the membership of the exclusive Euclid Golf Club, which was located on property owned by John D. Rockefeller at the top of Cedar Hill. Euclid members, J.B. Zerbe and Judge Dwane E. Tilden approached O.P. and M.J. Van Sweringen seeking to build a golf course and clubhouse in the Village of Shaker Heights. Both of the Van Sweringen brothers became founding members and served on the original House Committee.

On May 29, 1915 the original clubhouse formally opened with a dinner dance attended by 500 of Cleveland's society. Frank B. Mead, Cleveland's leading architect at the time, designed the clubhouse.

On May 31, 1915 the first golf swings were taken on Shaker's front nine. The first 18-hole scores were recorded on July 4, 1915 when the lower nine holes opened for play.

The Golf Course

The Shaker Heights Country Club 18-Hole Golf Course was designed by renown Scottish architect Donald Ross. The typical Donald Ross influences are witnessed all over the property with diabolical green complexes, short-drivable uphill Par 4 and strategically placed bunker complexes leaving players varieties of playable options.  SHCC is very proud of its Donald Ross heritage and continues to look for ways to improve upon the course while retaining his legacy.

Essential Responsibilities

The Assistant Professional will be involved in all areas of the operation with an emphasis on  managing the day-to-day operations, assisting with an active event schedule, providing quality golf  instruction, and committing to the following expectations: 

• Serve as a mentor and role model for all golf staff members. 
• Understand the entire operation thoroughly, including club rules, regulations, and policies.
• Display professionalism, understand the private club environment, and use good judgment when  making decisions. 
• Organize and conduct golf events for men, women, and mixed couples. Actively promote golf events and encourage participation. 
• Assist in all areas of the golf shop management and merchandise operation. 
• Provide quality golf instruction and club fitting services, receiving 100% of lesson revenue.
• Play golf with members and guests on a regular basis and improve your own game.
• Assist in managing the outside services program to uphold service and cleanliness standards.
• Prepare and send member and staff communications and updates. 
• Be willing to assist the operation beyond the areas outlined above to ensure all members and guests receive a first-class experience while at the club.

Expected Weekly Schedule
January thru March - 3/4 Days
April & October - 5 Days
May 1 thru September 30 - 6 Days
November 1 thru December 31 - 4/5 Days
Will be provided with PTO based on continous years of service
