The Division of Undergraduate Education (DUE) serves as the catalyst for enhancing the quality of the undergraduate student experience while promoting on-time graduation for all undergraduate students at Indiana University (IU) Indianapolis. 3 units report up to the DUE: University College, Honors College, and the Institute for Engaged Learning.Job Summary
The Assistant Director, Scholar Support Programs will develop, coordinate, and provide programmatic support across our department for the Nina Scholars, Bowen Scholars, and THRIVE Programs as part of Educational Success Programs and within the DUE. This position is primarily responsible for many aspects of these programs, including outreach, recruitment, engagement, instruction, success coaching, peer mentoring, scholarship funding, supervising student employees, facilitating student employment, and overseeing programmatic activities. This position facilitates the success of students who come from underserved backgrounds including students who are disconnected from parents or caregivers or have experienced homelessness, who have a disability, who have dependents, as well as selected students who have transferred from Ivy Tech.
Department-Specific Responsibilities
- Represent the program to our funder, campus partners, and community stakeholders.
- Develop, implement, and manage co-curricular programs to support Nina Scholar, Bowen Scholar, and THRIVE Program students. May include orientations, retreats, monthly workshops, community service, cultural events, graduation celebrations, etc.
- Maximize program participation and engagement.
- Provide individual support, utilizing 1-on-1 success coaching to guide THRIVE Program students in their unique growth and development, their pursuit of academic and financial goals, meeting challenges, and celebrating achievements.
- Actively refer students to appropriate campus resources and programs and collaborate with other campus programs and services to cooperatively and collaboratively provide support to program students.
- Work more intensively with students on academic probation.
- Hire, train, and supervise 2 student interns to support in the coordination of program components and supervise 12 peer mentors and 1 tutor throughout the year, supporting their professional and holistic development.
- Develop and oversee an integrated peer-mentoring program that builds on the curriculum from classes and reinforces the development and support of students in coordination with individual success coaching.
- Serve as lead instructor for a combined Summer Bridge course and 1 corresponding first-year seminar course sections to support students' transition to IU Indianapolis.
- Teach a section of UCOL-U201 Introduction to Mentoring.
- Design and implement outreach and recruitment to identified student populations, including developing relationships with community programs that serve independent youth, as well as coordinate referrals and student entry into the program.
- Develop and manage student employment program component to pair each student with a partnering employer, on or off campus, with the support of the Office of Student Employment.
- Coordinate student engagement with career exploration and support.
- Oversee the execution of student financial support and scholarship funding for students in the THRIVE Program as well the Ulbright, Hivey, and Welfare League scholarships.
- Serve on the Nina Scholars selection committee.
- Track and report on activities and services for program students. Keep accurate data on retention and related indicators of student success. Assist Director with program and learning outcomes assessment.
- Represent IU Indianapolis and our programs in relationships with external partners and primary funders.
- Develop and implement programs and initiatives that offer support for students in crisis, facing adversity or challenges, or who belong to an under-represented or minority student population.
- Interface directly with students by attending student programming events, advising student organization leaders, meeting 1-on-1 to discuss support needs, and gathering satisfaction feedback from student participants to implement into future student services initiatives and objectives. Place an emphasis on confidentiality of student concerns, university policy compliance, and a culture of care within all direct student interactions.
- Collaborate with staff in own department and other departments, as well as academic and campus leaders, on shared student support goals, often coordinating funding to sponsor student programs and initiatives.
- Project outcomes for support services offered at the program, department/division, or campus level. Measure and evaluate effectiveness of student support initiatives against projected outcomes; regularly prepare reports on impact to students and budget and present to stakeholders on effectiveness and to secure funding for initiatives moving forward.
- Serve on committees and perform student support research across the field of higher education and at peer institutions to identify and recommend best practices.
- Plan and coordinate communications for student support initiatives to ensure student participation, inclusion, and engagement.
- May provide guidance to other student support staff; make process recommendations to manager for improved delivery of service.
- May serve on various campus or cross-functional committees to share student support best practices.

EDUCATION
Required
- Bachelor's degree in education, public affairs, public health, counseling, social work, business, or related field
- Master's degree in higher education student affairs or related field

Working Conditions / Demands
This role requires the ability to effectively communicate and to operate a computer and other standard office productivity equipment. The position involves sedentary work as well as periods of time moving around an office environment and the campus. The person in this role must be able to perform the essential functions with or without an accommodation.

$50,648 - $52,000 annually, based on experience.
