OverviewAssistant in Training (AIT) - Position Overview
The Assistant in Training (AIT) plays a vital role in the daily operations of the golf course by supporting pace of play, member and guest services, and overall facility presentation. This position is designed to develop future golf professionals and leaders by providing hands-on experience in course management, operations oversight, and staff coordination.
The AIT works closely with the Opening Pro, Closing Pro, Marshall staff, Operations staff, and Shift Leaders, executing scheduled course runs and operational checks to ensure a smooth, high-quality experience for members and guests throughout the day.
Essential Responsibilities
Core Responsibilities
1. Course & Marshall Runs
The AIT conducts scheduled course and marshal runs throughout the day
- Pace of Play
- Monitoring group timing at key checkpoints:
- 1 hour → 5th fairway
- 2 hours → 10th tee
- 3 hours → 14th tee
- Identifying slow play early and communicating with the shift leader as needed
- Monitoring group timing at key checkpoints:
- Member & Guest Relations
- Providing professional, courteous guest service
- Addressing questions, concerns, and on-course needs
- Ensuring golfers are aware of course etiquette and rules (dress code, hats forward, etc.)
- Tee Sheet Accuracy
- Verifying player names, starting times, and transportation method (cart vs. walking)
- Reporting discrepancies to the golf shop
The AIT is responsible for Operation Runs, ensuring all key areas are properly staffed, stocked, and maintained.
Key Areas Covered:
- Cart Barn
- Ensure staff is on task
- Check cart cleanliness, washing area, ball washing area, laundry room
- Confirm trash is removed and taken to the dumpster
- Ensure carts are backed in and charging/plugged in when required
- Bag Drop & Parking Lot
- Organize golf carts neatly
- Verify correct pin sheets on carts and push carts
- Ensure carts are stocked with scorecards, pencils, towels, and sand bottles
- Maintain cleanliness and presentation
- Driving Range
- Pick and clean range balls
- Ensure ball crates are:
- Full at all times
- Lined up straight
- Positioned one foot in front of bag stands
- Ensure bag stands and alignment sticks are properly set
- Confirm:
- Fresh grass on weekends
- Mats set up during the week
- Check towels, amenities boxes, yardage signs, trash, and water in club cleaners
- Chipping Green
- Begin the day with a clean chipping area
- Maintain two full green shag bags
- Remove excess balls from green and surrounding rough
- Keep area free of broken tees and clutter
- Player Areas
- Remove cups, trash, and towels
- Maintain clean and inviting appearance
- Return mini-golf putters to proper storage when needed
During summer months, the AIT ensures:
- Ice towels are available in front of the golf shop
- Coolers are stocked with bottled water
- Supplies in the bag room are replenished
- Garbages in high-traffic areas are emptied regularly
- Talks and plans with the shift leader at the start of runs
- Provides updates on pace of play, staffing, and course conditions
- Assists in directing staff priorities during busy periods
- Learns operational decision-making alongside Opening and Closing Professionals
When working later shifts or assisting with closing duties, the AIT may help ensure:
- Carts are cleaned, dried, plugged in, and fully restocked
- Range is moved and prepared for the following day (mats vs. grass)
- Towels, laundry, sand bottles, and range balls are prepared
- All areas are cleaned, locked, and ready for next-day operations
